1. Gastroenterologist · turn 1

   Your faecal occult blood test was positive, so your GP referred you for a colonoscopy. The procedure lets us examine the colon and rectum for bleeding, inflammation, polyps or other abnormalities.

2. Patient · turn 2

   I am worried that it could be bowel cancer. My bowel habits have changed recently; I sometimes have diarrhoea and occasionally see blood on the stool.

3. Gastroenterologist · turn 3

   A positive screening result does not by itself mean cancer. Colonoscopy is the best way to identify the cause and, if we find a polyp, we may be able to remove it or take a biopsy for laboratory testing.

   How do I need to prepare before the test? I have heard that the bowel has to be completely clean.

5. Gastroenterologist · turn 5

   You will receive written bowel-preparation instructions. Usually this involves a low-fibre diet, clear fluids and a prescribed laxative; following the timing precisely is important so that we can see the bowel lining clearly.

   Will I be fully awake during the procedure? I am afraid of pain, and I also want to know whether I can drive myself home afterwards.

7. Gastroenterologist · turn 7

   Most patients receive sedation to make them relaxed and comfortable, although it is not the same as a general anaesthetic. You must arrange an adult to take you home and stay with you afterwards; do not drive or make important decisions that day.

   What are the risks of the procedure? Is it dangerous if you take a biopsy or remove a polyp?

9. Gastroenterologist · turn 9

   Serious complications are uncommon, but bleeding, reaction to sedation and perforation of the bowel are recognised risks. We will discuss your individual risks and ask for informed consent before the procedure.

   嚴重併發症並不常見，但出血、鎮靜反應和腸道穿孔都是已知風險。我們會與您討論個人風險，並在檢查前取得知情同意。

10. Patient · turn 10

    I understand. If the result is normal, will I need another colonoscopy in the future?

11. Gastroenterologist · turn 11

    That depends on the findings, your symptoms and your family history. If polyps are found, we may recommend surveillance at an interval suited to their type and number; we will explain the results and the follow-up plan after the test.
