aged careelder rightscarer support

An elder-rights caseworker conducts a telephone interview with a Chinese-speaking nursing home resident following a wellbeing notification.

  1. Caseworker · turn 1

Good morning, Ms Jiang. My name is Andy Lo. I’m calling on behalf of the Elder Rights Advocacy Service. I understand that this may be a sensitive time for you, and I appreciate your willingness to speak with me today. We received a report from your nursing home relating to some concerns about your wellbeing. Can you share with me how you’ve been feeling since your arrival?

  2. Ms Jiang · turn 2

Yes. Having a safe place to live now has certainly been a relief, but I’m still trying to process everything that happened before. The situation was genuinely quite bad before I moved here. I often felt isolated and helpless, and sometimes I didn’t even feel safe in my own home.

  3. Caseworker · turn 3

I’m very sorry to hear that. Please know that everything we discuss will be treated with confidentiality. You mentioned not feeling safe at home. Can you help me understand more about what happened? Was there anyone you were particularly concerned about?

  4. Ms Jiang · turn 4

Well, how should I put it? It’s genuinely difficult to talk about. It was actually my son. He had been caring for me and living with me, but as time passed, I felt that he began treating me as a burden. He would lose his temper over small things and sometimes shout at me. Sometimes he would leave me alone at home for several days without contacting me or checking whether I had enough food and medication. Later, he also began asking me for money frequently. I didn’t want to give it to him, but I became frightened whenever he lost his temper. Eventually, he took nearly all my savings, yet he continued asking me for more.

  5. Caseworker · turn 5

Thank you for sharing that with me. I understand it can be very difficult to speak up about these things. It sounds like your son was someone you should have been able to trust, so his actions are concerning. Has anyone else in your family been aware of the situation?

  6. Ms Jiang · turn 6

I tried to tell my daughter, but she said I was exaggerating and making a fuss over nothing. She said her brother had simply been caring for me for too long and was under too much pressure, which was why he had a bad temper. She didn’t want to become involved and told me not to make the matter any bigger. After that, I stopped saying anything. I had nobody to talk to and could only keep everything bottled up. For a while, I even felt that perhaps I really was too much trouble and had placed a burden on my children.

  7. Caseworker · turn 7

Being isolated can make situations like this even harder to endure, particularly when you feel you have no one you can turn to. I’d now like to talk about the care you’re receiving. Have you had any medical evaluations or health check-ups since your arrival at the nursing home?

  8. Ms Jiang · turn 8

Yes. The nurses here are very kind and attentive. They examined my physical condition and asked me some questions about my mental health. They also asked whether I had been sleeping well recently and whether I often felt frightened or anxious. That made me feel reassured. They seem genuinely concerned about my emotions and overall wellbeing. In the past, I always thought that I could simply endure these things until they passed, so I never took these issues seriously.

  9. Caseworker · turn 9

That’s very positive to hear. We can explore options for additional therapeutic support if that would be beneficial for you. I also want you to know that, as part of our role, we may suggest certain protective measures. This could include ongoing monitoring of your situation, working closely with the nursing home, or, where appropriate, taking legal action to prevent further harm. Before anything is decided, we would discuss the available options with you. How would you feel about us taking some of these steps on your behalf?

  10. Ms Jiang · turn 10

I... I’m very grateful. However, I’m also worried that doing this might have a negative effect on my son. After all, I don’t think he deliberately intended to hurt me. Perhaps he had simply been caring for me for too long and was under too much pressure. I don’t want the matter to become too serious, and I certainly don’t want him to get into trouble because of me. Still, knowing that someone is now willing to care about me and listen to what I have to say is a great relief. I had kept everything inside for far too long and was always worried about what might happen if I spoke up.

  11. Caseworker · turn 11

You’ve shown tremendous strength in speaking up today, Ms Jiang. I understand that you have concerns about how this may affect your son, and we’ll make sure that your views and wishes are taken into account. As we move forward, would you feel comfortable if we worked closely with the nursing home to make sure your needs are fully met and that you remain safe? We can also keep you informed about any further steps and discuss them with you as the situation develops.

  12. Ms Jiang · turn 12

Yes, thank you. That would make me feel much more secure. I genuinely don’t want any further conflict with my family, nor do I want to live in constant fear every day. From now on, I only want to live a peaceful and stable life, have my needs cared for, and perhaps one day be able to trust other people again.

  13. Caseworker · turn 13

Of course. Your safety and wellbeing are our priority. I’ll continue to liaise with the nursing home and make sure you’re kept informed. If at any stage you feel uncomfortable, unsafe, or simply want to talk about what has happened, please let the nursing home staff know so they can contact us. Thank you again for speaking so openly with me today, Ms Jiang.

  14. Ms Jiang · turn 14

All right. Thank you for being willing to listen to me. I genuinely feel much more relieved after speaking about it.
