   Good afternoon, ma'am. I'm Constable James Walker from New South Wales Police. Please have a seat. I understand you've come here to report a domestic violence incident. Before we begin, I want you to know that you're in a safe place, and we'll do everything we can to help you.

   Last night, my husband lost his temper again over something very minor. He has always had a bad temper and becomes angry easily over small matters. He often shouts at me and sometimes refuses to speak to me for several days. However, yesterday was the first time he had physically assaulted me since we married.

   I'm sorry to hear that. Could you describe what he did? Did he punch, kick or otherwise assault you?

   First, he kept insulting me, saying that I was useless and couldn’t do anything properly. Then he suddenly pushed me to the floor, grabbed my arm and threw me against the wall. I have bruises on my shoulder and arm, and they were still very painful this morning.

   Did he threaten you in any way, or use any weapons?

   He didn’t use a weapon, but he repeatedly threatened me. He said that, if I dared to leave him or report him to the police, he would make me pay. He also said he would take the children away and make sure I never saw them again.

   I understand. Apart from the physical assault, has there been any other form of abuse during your relationship, such as emotional, verbal, sexual or financial abuse?

    Yes. He often verbally abuses me, controls my bank account, prevents me from working and gives me no spending money. If I don’t agree to his demands, he deliberately ignores me and refuses to speak to me for several days. I always thought these were just marital arguments. Only now do I realise that this is also domestic violence.

    Thank you for telling me. These behaviours may amount to coercive control as well as domestic violence. Have the children ever witnessed these incidents?

    After the assault, did you seek any medical treatment?

    Yes. I went to the emergency department this morning. The doctor examined me, took photographs and advised me to report the matter to the police. I still have many bruises on my body.

    Not completely. I was extremely frightened when it happened, and my mind went blank. There is a period that I can’t remember at all. The doctor said it may be a temporary memory gap caused by the trauma.

17. Police Officer · turn 17

    That's not uncommon after traumatic incidents. Based on what you've told me today, we'll investigate the matter. We can also apply for an Apprehended Domestic Violence Order, or ADVO, to help protect you and your children. If your husband breaches the order, he may be charged with a criminal offence.
