   I can see that it’s quite large, and the colour is quite unusual as well. Do you mind telling me a little more about it? For example, how long it’s been there, whether it’s grown in size, and whether you’ve noticed any other symptoms.

   我看到這顆痣相當大，顏色也很不尋常。可以請您多告訴我一些情況嗎？例如，它出現多久了、有沒有變大，以及您是否注意到其他症狀。

   This mole has been on my arm for a long time, but it seems to have grown a little over the past two months, and its colour has changed as well. It isn’t painful, but it is a little itchy. After seeing it, my friend suggested that I should have it checked by a doctor.

   You’ve done the right thing by having it checked. Changes in the size, shape or colour of a mole, as well as symptoms such as itching or bleeding, can sometimes indicate skin cancer. I’ll need to examine it carefully and arrange a biopsy before we can make a definite diagnosis.

   Skin cancer? Although I spent more time outdoors in the sun this summer, I’ve never been sunburnt. Also, the area where this mole is located hasn’t been directly exposed to the sun, so I don’t think it would be skin cancer, would it?

   At this stage, I can’t say for sure. Melanoma commonly appears on the legs in women, while in men the torso is one of the most common sites. Keep in mind, though, that melanoma can arise anywhere on the skin, even in areas that aren’t normally exposed to the sun. If you’ve had a lot of exposure to ultraviolet radiation over time, your risk of developing melanoma can increase considerably. Have you been using adequate sun protection?

   I used sunscreen a few times, but it was sticky and felt uncomfortable all over my body, so I eventually threw it away. When I lived in China, I never used sunscreen or took any other sun-protection measures when I went out, and I never had any problems.

   UV exposure in Australia can be very high, so it’s particularly important to protect yourself from the sun here. Sunscreen is only one part of sun protection. You should also consider wearing protective clothing, a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses, and try to stay in the shade when UV levels are high.

11. Doctor · turn 11

    Most skin cancers can be treated successfully, particularly when they’re detected at an early stage. Depending on the type and severity, treatment may involve medication, topical creams or surgery to remove the cancerous cells. If the biopsy results indicate that your mole is indeed cancerous, we may need to perform further tests to determine what type of skin cancer it is, whether it has spread, and which treatment would be most appropriate.

    How is the biopsy performed? Will it be painful? Will I need to stay in hospital afterwards?

13. Doctor · turn 13

    It’s usually a minor procedure and can normally be done under local anaesthetic. We’ll numb the area first and remove a small sample of tissue, which will then be sent to pathology for examination. You generally won’t need to stay in hospital, although you may have some soreness afterwards and you’ll need to keep the wound clean and dry.

    Pathology results usually take several days, although the exact timeframe can vary. If the mole is benign and there are no other concerns, you may not need any further treatment. However, I’d still recommend regularly checking your skin for any new or changing moles.

    Look for any mole or spot that changes in size, shape or colour, develops an irregular border, becomes itchy or painful, or starts bleeding without an obvious reason. If you notice anything unusual, particularly a spot that looks different from your other moles, make an appointment rather than waiting to see whether it goes away.

    請留意任何大小、形狀或顏色發生變化的痣或斑點，以及邊緣變得不規則、發癢、疼痛或無明顯原因而出血的情況。如果您發現任何異常，尤其是看起來與其他痣不同的斑點，請預約看醫生，不要等着看它會不會自行消失。

    Yes. I’d prefer to investigate it rather than leave it unchecked. If you could follow the receptionist, she’ll help you arrange the biopsy. Once we receive the pathology results, we’ll contact you and arrange a follow-up appointment if necessary.
